Overview

If your team builds in Linear and logs hours in Timely, this integration keeps everything aligned—no duplicate setup, no manual copying, no “wait, what did I work on today?” moments.

It aligns your real development work so you can easily reference what happened, when. Whether you’re organizing across dev teams or just logging time to the right issue, everything stays connected between the tools you actually use.

The current Linear integration lets you log hours directly to Issues and Sub-issues from Linear—no special setup required. These appear in Timely as reference points when logging time, so you can track exactly where your effort went without any hassle.

👀 In the future, we may expand the integration to support full issue and sub-issue sync as Tasks in Timely. Stay tuned—we’re just getting started!

🧠 Memories created from your Linear activity

Whenever you take action in Linear, Timely can turn that activity into a Memory, helping you accurately recall how your day was spent and making time logging a breeze.

Here’s what generates a Memory in Timely:

  • 🆕 Creating or updating a Linear issue

  • 💬 Adding or editing a comment

  • 📋 Updating a project

  • 🔄 Creating or updating a Cycle (sprint)

  • 🌐 Visiting any linear.app page

📋 Logging time against Linear issues

Once connected, Linear issues are available when logging time in Timely:

  • Search for issues directly in the time entry form

  • Select the issue you worked on

  • Log your time as usual

The issue stays a reference, not a task—perfect for teams who want accurate time tracking without cluttering Timely with hundreds of dev tickets.

These references appear as the Linked Work option in AutoSheet or the Attach a Task option when logging on the Classic timeline.

🗑️ Removing the Linear integration

Moving away from Linear as your source of truth? No problem, disconnecting the integration just takes a few clicks.

The admin who originally set up the connection can head to Settings > Ecosystem in Timely, select Linear, then click Settings followed by Disconnect. You’ll be asked to confirm—just click Disconnect again to finalize.

Heads up: any imported objects will remain in Timely after disconnection. They won’t be automatically deleted.

🙋 FAQs

Does Timely send anything back to Linear?

This initial release of the integration includes one-way sync FROM Linear TO Timely. In the future we'll be exploring additional sync capabilities—stay tuned for more!

Do I need the Tasks add-on to use the Linear integration?

Nope! This initial version of the Linear integration doesn’t import issues or sub-issues as Tasks in Timely—it’s all about letting you log time against existing Linear work. The Tasks add-on isn’t required.

I’ve set up the Linear integration—do I still need the Memory app?

Absolutely. While the Linear integration brings in key activities from Linear, it likely won’t capture everything you worked on throughout the day. That’s where the Memory app shines—it runs quietly in the background to log all your activity across apps and tools, giving you the full picture when it’s time to log your hours.

What’s the deal with fallback clients? Why are some projects showing up under the wrong client?

Timely uses fallback logic when it can’t confidently map a Linear project to a selected team—for example, if a project belongs to multiple teams or a team wasn’t selected during setup. In those cases, the project is assigned to a fallback client in Timely.

You can always manually move a project to the correct client afterward from the project settings in Timely.

Do project or issue status changes in Linear sync to Timely?

Not at this time. Archiving or completing a project in Linear won’t archive or complete it in Timely. However, if you interact with an archived issue, you may still see updates reflected in Timely on an item-by-item basis.
